  • How often should I pump my tank?

The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act requires pumping your septic tank every 3–5 years. Should your system experience a higher volume of use, this frequency should be done every 3 years. If this is the case, it is recommended that the pump chamber be cleaned every other time that the septic tank is serviced.

  • Is A & M Septic Service LLC bonded, insured, licensed and certified to perform pumping, repairs, and inspections in the Commonwealth of Virginia?

Yes! A & M Septic Service LLC is certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation. Certifications through this entity include a Class-C Contractor's license with SDS Specialty and certifications for the operation of both alternative and conventional septic systems. In addition, we are licensed by the Virginia Department of Health through the local health department in the counties of our operation.

Do's and Don'ts

  • DO have the system inspected and pumped every 3–5 years. If the tank fills up with an excess of solids, the wastewater will not have enough time to settle in the tank. These excess solids will then pass on to the drain field, where they will clog the drain lines and soil.
  • DON'T use your toilet or sink as a trash can by dumping non-biodegradables, such as cigarette butts, diapers, feminine products, or grease down your sink or toilet. Non-biodegradables can clog the pipes, while grease can thicken and clog pipes. Store cooking oils, fats, and grease in a can for disposal in the garbage, or better yet, bring it to a recycling facility.
  • DO divert roof drains and surface water from driveways and hillsides away from the septic system. Keep sump pumps and house footing drains away from the system as well.
  • DO NOT plant trees within 30 feet of your system or park/drive over any part of the system. Tree roots can clog your pipes. Heavy vehicles can collapse a drain field.
  • MOST IMPORTANT - DO NOT allow anyone to repair or pump your system without first checking that they are licensed system professionals through the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation.
